The RANZCP is seeking an Independent Director to join our Board.
About the RANZCP
The RANZCP’s Vision is excellence and equity in the provision of mental healthcare. Our purpose is to support our members, advance psychiatry, and advocate for the best mental health outcomes for our communities.
The RANZCP is responsible for training, educating, and representing psychiatrists in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. We are dedicated to delivering on our commitment to:

RANZCP Board
The RANZCP Board is the governing body of the RANZCP and comprises of seven RANZCP Fellows who are elected by the RANZCP Fellowship to the positions of President (Chair of the Board), President-Elect, and five Elected Directors. Additionally, a Director who is an Associate (Trainee) member of the College is appointed by the Board.
The Board has statutory responsibilities in accordance with the Corporations Act 2001, the Australian ACNC Act 2012, the RANZCP Constitution and its Regulations.
The Board plays a critical role in setting strategic direction, overseeing governance, financial sustainability and risk, stewarding the organisation, safeguarding integrity and trust, and ensuring the RANZCP remains credible, independent, and responsive to its members and the communities it serves.

Independent Director
In 2025, the Board agreed to utilise the second Appointed Director clause of the Constitution to appoint an Independent Director.
The Independent Director:
- will strengthen the objectivity of the College’s governance and provide constructive input to the Board, its committees and executive.
- is designed to complement the strengths of the Board by enhancing independence and accountability, and
- will offer an unbiased perspective while supporting the Board’s strategic development and ambitious reform agenda.
- is a key part of a broader strategy to ensure the College remains in a strong position to meet the challenges of today, anticipate future opportunities and risks, and continue delivering on the College’s shared vision.
The Independent Director position term is two years, commencing in June 2026 and concluding at the RANZCP Annual General Meeting in May 2028.

Strategic context
This appointment takes place at an important moment in the RANZCP’s evolution.
Guided by the Strategic Plan 2026–2030 (in development), the RANZCP is progressing significant reform across education and training, governance, digital systems, and organisational structures.
The RANZCP is seeking an Independent Director who is willing to sustain momentum where progress has been made, engage constructively with ongoing reform, and collaborate effectively with fellow Directors and the Executive to support a high-functioning, future-focused Board.
