About

The Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age (FPOA) is a body of experts that promotes the highest standards in clinical practice, training and research pertaining to old age psychiatry. Old age psychiatry is a psychiatric subspecialty focusing on the mental health of older persons.

Aims

The Faculty aims to:

  • promote the objectives of the College relating to old age psychiatry
  • advise on training in old age psychiatry through the subcommittee of advanced training
  • advance and disseminate research in old age psychiatry
  • contribute to and promote the highest standards of clinical practice.

Current committee members

The chair of the FPOA bi-national committee is Dr David Lie.

Membership

All members of the College (including trainees and Affiliates) are eligible to join the Faculty.

The accredited membership criteria [53 KB] outlines the pathways to receiving accredited membership. 

Accredited membership is currently available for members of the College who have completed the relevant RANZCP Certificate of Advanced Training.

Awards

The Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age prizes promote excellence in advancing the quality of life in older people with mental illness:

  • The Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age Basic Psychiatric Trainee Prize
  • The Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age Prize for Best Mental Health Service Improvement
  • The Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age Psychiatric Trainee Prize for Scholarly Project

Applications are open 1 September–31 October each year.

Training

The Certificate of Advanced Training in Psychiatry of Old Age is the premier training program in Australia and New Zealand in old age psychiatry.

Policy and advocacy

The Faculty contributes regularly to RANZCP position statements, and is involved in consultations on behalf of the College.
