Funding for STP posts
The Specialist Training Program (STP) provides organisations with funding of a salary contribution of $105,000 (ex. GST) per FTE post per year.
The duration of the funding awarded is determined by the Department of Health (DoH), and can be for a single year or for multiple years.
Additional forms of funding:
STP Posts in regional and remote areas of Australia may be eligible for an annual loading of up to $30,000 (GST exclusive). This loading is provided by the Commonwealth and managed by the RANZCP, and assists with additional costs associated with having an STP training position in regional and remote settings.
The information below includes information for STP training post providers on eligibility, use of funding and payment.
Eligibility for Rural Loading is determined via the Australian Standard Geographical Classification Remoteness Area (ASGS-RA 2016) status of the STP Post training setting/s. These can be checked by visiting the Department of Health’s Doctor Connect website.
The RANZCP’s STP team contacts eligible STP training post providers to alert them to the possibility of claiming Rural Loading, however, if you would like to check or clarify your Post eligibility status, please contact the STP team.
RANZCP STP Posts with a training component in an RA2-5 setting are eligible for an annual Rural Loading of up to $30,000 (GST exclusive)/full-time equivalent (FTE) up to the current end date of the STP.
How Rural Loading can be used
The purpose of Rural Loading is to supplement expenses incurred by participants in having a trainee in a rural STP Post, including:
- Resources (e.g. books, computers)
- Attendance at training courses, meetings and conferences
- Videoconferencing facilities
- Broadband access/IT upgrades
- Research projects (e.g. access to online library)
- Relocation costs
- Travel expenses
- Accommodation costs.
How Rural Loading is paid
Rural Loading is paid twice yearly in arrears. STP Participants with eligible posts are requested to report on and submit an invoice for Rural Loading funds for the previous rotation as part of the STP Reporting Schedule.
Payment is made to participants pro rata per FTE and is subject to the post being filled for the past rotation.
Private Infrastructure and Clinical Supervision Allowance (PICS)
Under the Private Infrastructure and Clinical Supervision Allowance (PICS) scheme, private-sector organisations with currently funded STP training posts may be eligible for funds to cover infrastructure and clinical supervision.
For each private-sector FTE training post the maximum amount available is:
- $30,000 (ex. GST) per annum pro rata for clinical supervision and/or infrastructure costs.
Applicants who are successful in their application for STP funding will have their eligibility for the PICS allowance determined at the time of application. Eligible posts will be contacted in writing.
What is the STP?
The Specialist Training Program (STP) seeks to extend vocational training for specialist registrars into settings outside traditional metropolitan teaching hospitals, including regional, rural and remote and private facilities. The program aims to improve the quality of the future specialist workforce by providing registrars with exposure to a broader range of healthcare settings. STP also aims to have a positive influence on future workforce distribution.
The RANZCP participates in this program as part of its commitment to expanding training opportunities for specialist trainees.
