Updated In-Training Assessment form to be implemented from August 2027

The College is developing an updated In-Training Assessment (ITA) form with implementation planned to begin in August 2027.

The updated ITA form is being developed following consultation with a range of stakeholders, including Directors of Training, supervisors and relevant College committees including the Trainees’ Advisory Council and the Bi-national Committee for Trainees.

Principal supervisors have trialed the proposed form to assess its usability and identify refinements for the final version. The updated ITA form will be made available in due course for trainees and SIMGs to preview.

The updated ITA form aims to:

  • Improve consistency in how supervisors complete the form.
  • Support supervisors to provide constructive, detailed feedback that encourages reflection and development for all trainees/SIMGs.
  • Strengthen the ITA as a source of evidence for Clinical Competency Portfolio Review decision-making process.

The proposed changes include:

  • A holistic rating for each CanMEDS domain, with additional ratings for individual items within the Medical Expert domain. All other domains will receive a holistic rating only.
  • Narrative comment sections for supervisors to explain the rationale for their ratings.
  • Identification of the sources of evidence used to inform judgements about performance in each CanMEDS domain.

The current ITA form will remain in use until the updated form is introduced.
