Early insights from the 2025 Medical Training Survey results

The 2025 Medical Training Survey (MTS) results are now available on the MTS website

The Medical Board of Australia’s annual MTS captures the experiences of doctors in training nationally. In 2025, it received 17,622 eligible responses, including 597 RANZCP trainees, representing 24.4% of the College’s cohort. This marks a significant drop in participation compared to previous years (40–50%), which will be a key consideration when conducting year-on-year comparisons.

Early insights

Initial high-level findings show that most RANZCP trainees would recommend their workplace (78%) and training position (74%) though both remain slightly below national results. Supervision is a key strength with 87% of trainees rating it as excellent or good, and ~97% are confident they can reach senior staff for patient concerns. A strong 98% of trainees intend to continue with training, though a small proportion (6%) are considering leaving medicine within 12 months, which warrants continued monitoring.

While most trainees (almost 85%) report positive workplace culture and strong wellbeing support, around one third experienced or witnessed bullying, harassment or discrimination in the past year, with mixed satisfaction regarding follow-up.

The results also highlight several areas that present clear opportunities for improvement. Only around 35% of trainees report timely or useful assessment feedback. Exam alignment with curriculum and smooth exam delivery is also rated lower than national averages. Teaching quality (75% excellent/good) and access to learning opportunities trail national benchmarks, with trainees citing workload and timetable pressures as barriers to training. 66% of trainees work 40 hours or more per week, and unrostered overtime is less likely to be paid or claimed compared with national figures.

Next steps

The RANZCP is committed to using these results to strengthen our training program and experience. The Committee for Education Evaluation, Monitoring and Reporting will further analyse the results and develop recommendations to be presented to the Education Committee in Q1 2026.

The College thanks all trainees who took part in the survey. These results provide vital guidance on where our efforts should be focused. A detailed report will be shared once available.
