Information on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) funding models
18 Jul 2024
Policy
In 2023, an application was made to the Medical Services Advisory Committee for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) to be funded under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).
The decision on the application was made in February 2024. The application was not approved and instead it was recommended that funding models outside of the MBS be considered.
This has been referred to the Section of Neuropsychiatry and Section of Electroconvulsive Therapy and Neurostimulation for further consideration who are reviewing and advocating for alternative pilot models that could be implemented.
