I had such an amazing time attending the PIF Retreat. As someone who has had a strong interest in psychiatry throughout my studies, the retreat helped to affirm that a career in psychiatry is the perfect fit for me.
My favourite presentation came from a clinical research psychiatrist exploring novel, cutting-edge therapies. Hearing about approaches beyond traditional pharmacotherapy was genuinely exciting and struck me as a future career aspiration — merging clinical practice with research. Research has always been something I've wanted to weave into my future career, and this talk affirmed that aspiration in a way that felt tangible and achievable. I also really enjoyed the lived experience talk, which emphasised the patient experience and the importance of always keeping an open mind. It was a powerful reminder that beyond a diagnosis there is a person with a story, and that it is an incredible privilege to work with people in their most vulnerable moments to help them live happier and healthier lives.
I was surprised to see just how many different career opportunities psychiatry has to offer. I had some awareness of the diversity within the field, but the retreat genuinely expanded my understanding of what a life in psychiatry could look like. It affirmed that psychiatry aligns not only with my clinical interests but with my values around advocacy, community, and innovation. I left feeling motivated, informed, and more committed than ever to pursuing this career path.
