Rural, unpacked with the Rural Champions

The RANZCP Rural Psychiatry Training Pathways (RPTP) Rural Champions recently hosted an interactive Q&A session for PIF members, current trainees, registrars and Fellows who may be interested in practising in a rural location.

Rural, unpacked explored why psychiatry in a rural location is a meaningful career path, and the practical supports available. The Rural Champions addressed topics such as the rural case-mix, transcultural nuances, supervision, mentoring and lifestyle opportunities.

Key insights include:

  • Rural ≠ lesser: psychiatry in rural areas is rich, complex and professionally expansive
  • Longitudinal relationships (with patients, teams and communities) are central
  • Training quality is relational, not location‑dependent
  • Funding and infrastructure, not interest or capacity, are the main constraints
  • Rural settings often accelerate confidence, leadership and clinical maturity.

The Rural Champions initiative is an activity of the RANZCP’s Rural Psychiatry Roadmap 2021–2031, which aims to create and promote a positive rural and generalist Fellowship culture across the College membership.
