Rural Readiness Workshops – supporting the next generation of Rural psychiatrists

The Rural Readiness Project is off to a strong start, with highly successful workshops held in Cairns, Queensland and Shepparton, Victoria.

These events were designed to equip trainees and Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) with the skills, confidence and networks needed to excel in rural and regional psychiatry.

Participants took part in interactive case studies, panel discussions, and small-group conversations with psychiatrists currently working in rural settings. This combination of practical advice and authentic reflection proved invaluable. As one participant shared: “It was helpful to hear about both the challenges and the rewards of rural practice. The honesty of the speakers really stood out.”

Feedback across both workshops has been overwhelmingly positive, with Net Promoter Scores above 80. Participants reported leaving with greater clarity about what rural practice involves and a renewed sense of motivation. As a participant noted: “The workshop gave me the confidence to consider rural training and reassured me that there will be support available if I do.”

Networking and peer support were also key highlights. “It was great to connect with other trainees who are thinking about rural careers. I now feel like I have a network I can call on,” one attendee said.

The program is set to continue with workshops around the country over the coming months:

  • Port Macquarie, NSW – 26–27 September
  • Darwin, NT – 10–11 October
  • Hobart, TAS – 6 November
  • Hahndorf, SA – 21–22 November
  • Bunbury, WA – 28–29 November

These workshops will continue to provide a platform for learning, connection and inspiration, helping to build a strong pipeline of psychiatrists making a real difference in rural communities.
