Trainee news
The RANZCP will move the Modified Essay Questions (MEQ) examination to a computer-based format from 2026, with a staged rollout to ensure a smooth transition for candidates.
Computer-based delivery offers several advantages for trainees and specialist international medical graduates, including improved exam legibility, streamlined marking processes, and faster turnaround times for results. The integrated system will also support online marking, enabling more timely and tailored feedback to candidates.
To support a smooth transition, candidates sitting the March 2026 MEQ examination will have the option to choose either the paper-based format or the new computer-based version. From September 2026, the MEQ examination will be delivered exclusively in the computer-based format.
A demo version of the online MEQ examination will be made available on the College website to allow trainees and SIMGs to explore the online exam interface and functionality of the system in advance. The platform is designed to be intuitive, displaying the question vignette alongside the response box to allow easy reference when constructing responses.
To prepare for the rollout, a pilot test of the computer-based MEQ will take place on 24 November 2025. This pilot will allow for comprehensive testing of the exam delivery processes and identify any necessary refinements ahead of the formal launch in March 2026. Expressions of interest to participate in the pilot will be invited soon.
For any questions regarding the transition, please contact meq@ranzcp.org.
