Victoria Wilson
Profile

Dr Victoria Wilson
Born and raised in Adelaide, Dr Victoria Wilson completed her undergraduate degree in International Studies, Graduate Diploma in Psychology and Postgraduate Medicine at Flinders University, South Australia. After completing Stage 1 and 2 of Psychiatry Training in Adelaide, Dr Wilson needed to explore new opportunities to undertake her preferred pathway of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
When advanced training positions became available in both Melbourne and Alice Springs, Dr Wilson chose to continue her journey in a rural setting — a decision that has brought significant professional and personal fulfilment.
Alice Springs was already a meaningful place for Dr Wilson. She lived there briefly before studying medicine and returned several times during training for research and clinical rotations, with each experience strengthening her connection to the community. The encouragement and support of the Alice Springs Mental Health Service reinforced that the choice for Alice Springs was the right one at the time, and Dr Wilson remains proud to work within a team that supported her throughout training.
Practicing psychiatry in a rural setting is more than delivering mental health care for Dr Wilson, it’s about providing support that is accessible and part of the local community. In communities like Alice Springs, continuity of care fosters trust, strengthens relationships and helps reduce stigma around seeking support. Dr Wilson says it is a privilege to work with the patients and families of Alice Springs not only to help with their challenges but to also celebrate their strengths and successes.
Dr Wilson is inspired by pioneers in healthcare, people who challenge barriers and strive to improve systems, even when change is slow. Their determination reminds Dr Wilson of the importance of continual progress, compassion and advocacy within the psychiatry profession.
Dr Wilson takes an active role in building a sustainable and culturally respectful mental health service in Alice Springs. She also advocates for continuity of staffing and equitable service delivery and has been contributing to a proposal for more responsive outreach services to remote Aboriginal communities.
Dr Wilson helps others see what she has experienced first-hand - that Alice Springs is not only a great place to live and work, but a location where a meaningful, enriching and long-term career can thrive.
The RANZCP Rural Champions initiative was funded by the Australian Government under the Psychiatry Workforce Program.
