Professor John O’Brien
John O’Brien is Professor of Old Age Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, UK. He undertook his medical and psychiatric training in Cambridge, Oxford and London, and spent two years as a lecturer at the University of Melbourne.
He is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Emeritus Senior Investigator, a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and previously was the NIHR National Specialty Lead for Dementia. He has been a member of several national (e.g. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)) and International Groups involved in developing dementia guidelines and new diagnostic criteria. He is a past recipient of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ lifetime achievement award in Older People’s Mental Health..
His research interests include the use of neuroimaging and other biomarkers in dementia and clinical trials. He has particular expertise in non-Alzheimer dementias, most especially the diagnosis and management of Lewy body dementia.
