RANZCP Statement on Bondi Beach Terrorist Attack
15 Dec 2025
Update
The following statement is attributed to Dr Astha Tomar, President of the RANZCP:
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) vehemently condemns yesterday's terrorist attack in Bondi.
This deliberate act of violence against the Jewish community during a time of religious observance and celebration was an act of senseless terrorism rooted in antisemitism and bigotry.
Our hearts are with the Jewish community - with those directly impacted, their families and loved ones, and with everyone who now feels less safe in their own community. No one should fear violence while celebrating their faith and culture.
The rising expressions of antisemitism and bigotry in Australia, including acts of direct violence against people and property, are abhorrent and anathema to our values and what this country represents.
As psychiatrists, we understand the deep psychological wounds that acts of terror inflict, not just on those directly harmed, but on entire communities. The fear, grief, and trauma from events like this can have lasting effects on mental health and wellbeing.
We are committed to supporting those affected through this difficult time. Psychiatrists stand ready to provide care for anyone experiencing distress following this traumatic event, and to support those whose existing mental health conditions may be worsened by these circumstances.
In times like these, it is crucial that we come together, supporting one another and rejecting hatred in all its forms. We must not allow fear and division to take root, but instead lean on our shared humanity and commitment to a society where everyone feels safe and valued.
RANZCP stands firmly with Australia's Jewish community against hatred and antisemitism in all its forms.
