Psychiatry Supply and Demand Study released in Australia
19 Jun 2025
Update
The RANZCP has welcomed the Psychiatry Supply and Demand Study released today by the Federal Department of Health, Disability and Ageing in Australia.
This health workforce model provides important new data projecting Australia's psychiatrist supply and demand over a 25-year period (2024-2048). The RANZCP worked closely with the Department for its development to ensure the study accurately reflects the realities facing members and the community.
Despite 2.8% workforce growth from 2019-2023, the study confirms significant shortages persist across all states and territories, particularly in rural, regional and remote areas. The evidence suggests that Australia is projected to have a significant gap in its psychiatry workforce over the next 25 years, with a 20.7% projected undersupply in 2048.
The RANZCP will analyse the study's findings over the coming days and provide further information on implications for our Fellows, Affiliates and trainees, the communities they serve, and the broader mental health sector.
