Progress made but more to be done: Update on the RANZCP Gender Equity Action Plan
24 Feb 2026
Update
The RANZCP Gender Equity Action Plan, launched in 2023, is a living document, continually adapting to ensure sustained and meaningful progress towards gender equity in psychiatry. Out of the 36 actions it identified, 18 have been completed and our goal is to complete 70% of the actions by the end of this year.
In 2025:
- Committee membership increased to 47% women (up from 43% in 2024).
- 55% of the new trainee intake were women.
- 41% of women trainees (up from 36% in 2024) used the new, more equitable part-time training fee structure.
- A balanced number of men and women were nominated for College grants and awards, with women receiving more awards than men for the first time – 13 of 22 total awards.
- Better gender balance in mentors volunteering for the RANZCP Mentoring Program - 35 women, 36 men, 1 gender diverse.
- College conference presentations on women's mental health / women in psychiatry increased from 3 in 2024 to 12 in 2025.
Areas for further action include:
- Improving the gender imbalance in Committee Chairs – Only 33% of Committee Chair roles were filled by women, and only 2 out of 9 Australian Branch and New Zealand National Committee Chairs were women.
- Increasing the number of thematic streams relating to women’s mental health and women in psychiatry at College conferences – only 3 streams were presented in 2025.
