Resources for leadership and management

The RANZCP Section of Leadership and Management (SLAM) supports psychiatrists to develop the skills, experience and confidence to aspire to and perform well in leadership and management roles.

The following resources have been identified by the SLAM committee as credible and potentially useful.

Members are encouraged to contact the committee via with feedback and other resources

Professional organisations and colleges

Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA)

Some RANZCP Fellows who develop an interest in administration, management and leadership have found significant benefit from formal training and obtaining a further Fellowship through RACMA.

Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM)

An alternative College path to RACMA is the Fellowship Program of the ACHSM.

ACHSM is the peak professional body for health managers in Australasia and brings together health leaders to learn, network and share ideas. The mission of the college is to recognise, develop and support effective health leadership and management to deliver quality services and improve health and wellbeing by:

  • providing the best professional development and networking opportunities for health managers
  • advocating for and promoting the health management profession
  • recognising the achievements of health service managers
  • promoting innovation and excellence.

Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD)

The formal qualification offered by AICD is also considered important for participation in any formal Board activity. ACID delivers core education courses and events, develops policy on director issues, publishes Company Director magazine and good practice books for directors, and represents the views of members nationally.

International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua)  

ISQua’s professional development program includes talks, debates, online workshops and webinars in all areas of health care safety and quality, as well as a Fellowship program.

International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL)

Senior RANZCP Fellows are members and leaders of the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL). The IIMHL is an international government-to-government intiative, funded by Australia, England, Canada the Netherlands, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, USA and Sweden.

It organises systems for international innovation sharing, networking and problem solving across countries and agencies. The overall aim is to provide better outcomes for people who use mental health and addiction services and their families.

Faculty for Medical Leadership and Management UK

The Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) is an intercollegiate professional body which promotes excellence in leadership on behalf of all doctors in the United Kingdom.

University courses

Master of Health Administration / Management

A Master of Health Administration/Management program provides students with the essential knowledge, skills and attributes required to undertake challenging senior managerial roles in health services either in Australia or internationally.

Master of Public Health

The Public Health program provides preparation for education, research and service in all aspects of public health. The program includes study in epidemiology, biostatistics, quantitative and qualitative research methods, health promotion, health policy and health services management, as well as topical public health issues. It is designed to address the continuing education needs of specialists in public health as well as providing an orientation to public health issues and methods for health professionals.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) / Health Management

A Master of Business Administration (Healthcare Management) may be a good alternative post graduate or additional degree to the Master of Health Administration.
