Section of Electroconvulsive Therapy and Neurostimulation

The RANZCP Section of Electroconvulsive Therapy and Neurostimulation (SEN) promotes the highest standards in clinical practice, training and research pertaining to electroconvulsive therapy and neurostimulation.

The Regulations [PDF; 270 KB] of the SEN outline the role and responsibilities of the bi-national Section.

Electroconvulsive therapy and neurostimulation

Electroconvulsive therapy and neurostimulation is a therapeutic, medical procedure for the treatment of severe psychiatric disorders.

It is beneficial for patients with clinical depression who have not responded to other treatments, or for patients with severe and acute presentations of depression. For selected patients, it has benefits in mania, psychosis and other neuropsychiatric conditions.

Its primary purpose is to quickly and significantly alleviate severe psychiatric symptoms and restore a person to optimum mental health and functioning.

Aims

This Section aim to:

  • promote the objectives of the College relating to electroconvulsive therapy and neurostimulation
  • advise on training in electroconvulsive therapy and neurostimulation
  • advance and disseminate research on electroconvulsive therapy and neurostimulation
  • contribute to and promote the highest standards of clinical practice.

Membership

All members of the College (including trainees and Affiliates) are eligible to join this Section. For further information on membership, please email membership@ranzcp.org.
