Often a source of anxiety, we hope to demystify the role of the coroner, enhance members' understanding of the coroners' functions, and explore how we can work together.
Coroner Ingrid Giles was appointed to the Coroners Court in 2023. She will discuss the role of the coroner with focus on mental health examples, including following suicides. This session will be valuable to trainees, fellows and affiliates, relevant to members in public and private practice, with and without forensic experience. Join us for discussion and feel free to ask any burning questions to increase our collective understanding of the important role of the Coroners Court and how we can use their findings to improve our understanding and practices.
Learning outcomes for attendees:
- Understand the role of the coroner
- Know how to navigate different stages in an investigation following the death of a patient, including access to the outcome
- Recognise the responsibilities of the mental health medical practitioner in preparing documentation or evidence for the coroner
- Reflect on the outcomes of the coroners findings, the impact on practice, policies, families and community
- Consider and explore the supports to practitioners through this process
Speaker:
Coroner Giles has worked as senior legal counsel at the Coroners Court for the past three years, advising coroners on complex coronial cases, appearing as counsel assisting in inquests, and advising on Supreme Court matters.
Coroner Giles has represented marginalised women in criminal law and related civil matters in the Magistrates' and County Courts, including through her work with the Law and Advocacy Centre for Women and Koori Courts.
