Brian Draper speaks with John Snowdon about his early career in the UK and Australia and how he gravitated towards old age psychiatry.

Professor John Snowdon
John Snowdon MD, MPhil, FRANZCP, FRCPsych, FRACP, AM first worked in old age psychiatry in 1973. At Sydney’s Prince of Wales and Prince Henry Hospitals he became progressively more involved in psychiatric services for older people and in the community. In 1992 he was appointed director of psychogeriatric services in Central Sydney and Associate Professor (later promoted to Clinical Professor) at Sydney University. His MD was on late life depression; he has authored over 150 research papers and co-authored a book on squalor. He was inaugural chair of the RANZCP’s Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age (1999-2001) and was awarded an A.M. in 2003.
