Section 4: Self-guided learningThe WA Eating Disorders Outreach and Consultation Service (WAEDOCS), RichMind and the WA Branch of the RANZCP are delighted to welcome Dr. Walter Kaye, Emeritus Distinguished Professor at University of California San Diego (UCSD), to share his internationally recognised pioneering work in the field of the neurobiological and genetic basis of eating disorders.
Dr Kaye was the Founder and Executive Director of the UCSD Eating Disorders Research and Treatment Center. His extensive research career (over 450 papers and over 43,000 citations) has focused on exploring the relationship between brain and behavior using brain imaging and genetics and developing and applying new treatments for anorexia and bulimia nervosa, such as Temperament Based-Treatment (TBT). As director and founder of the Price Foundation International Collaboration he undertook the first large scale study on the genetics of eating disorders, subsequently exploring the link between anxiety disorders and OCD in adolescence prior to the onset of AN and potential shared etiological mechanisms.
This presentation will discuss how biological and genetic vulnerabilities contribute to anxiety and pathological eating behavior, and how this understanding can inform emerging treatments.
Psychiatrists and Specialist Clinicians working in the field of eating disorders in WA are encouraged to come together face to face for a networking event from 5pm, followed by a presentation from Emeritus Professor Kaye from 6pm to 7.30pm, which includes an online option.

Dr Walter Kaye
Dr. Walter Kaye attended Oberlin College and Ohio State College of Medicine and then completed neurology residency at Los Angeles County-USC, followed by a psychiatry residency at UCLA, and then a research fellowship at the NIMH Clinical Center in Bethesda Md. In addition, Dr. Kaye founded an eating disorders program at Dominion in Northern Virginia.
He was recruited to the UC San Diego faculty from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he was a professor of psychiatry and research director of the eating disorder program, and where he received a NIMH senior scientist award. Dr. Kaye was a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and was the Founder and Executive Director of the UCSD Eating Disorders Research and Treatment Center.
Dr. Kaye recently retired from UCSD and is an Emeritus Distinguished Professor at UCSD. His research has focused on exploring the relationship between brain and behavior using brain imaging and genetics and developing and applying new treatments for anorexia and bulimia nervosa, such as Temperament Based-Treatment (TBT). Dr Bree Wyeth
Dr Wyeth has been a fellow of the college since 2012. Bree has worked in a diverse range of Australian state/territory services and PHN funded community mental health services in her career so far. She has a keen interest in better service design to meet the needs of persons struggling with intersecting issues, especially co-occurring needs of addiction and mental ill health and socio-economic disadvantage.
Bree is a general psychiatrist with additional qualifications in forensic and addiction psychiatry.

Hi is a psychiatrist with a strong interest in acute psychiatry both on the emergency department setting and on inpatient units, as well as treatment of people with borderline personality disorder.
