Dr Sandra Hacker AO

Sandra is a psychiatrist in private practice and was liaison psychiatrist to the Alfred Hospital Heart-Lung Transplant Unit. Her clinical interest is major psychological trauma, treating adult victims of severe childhood sexual abuse. Her medicolegal career began in the 1990s within the Victims of Crime jurisdiction. She gave evidence in one of the first cases of repressed memory which eventually led to modifications in the statute of limitations. She was the expert witness for the amicus curiae group of Women Lawyers Against Female Genital Mutilation. Her interest in psychological trauma led to work in the workers’ compensation field, initially as an independent medical examiner. She joined Medical Panels in 1998 becoming a Deputy Convener in 2020.
She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2005 for services to the medical profession and awarded an Honorary Doctor of Medical Science degree by the University of Melbourne in 2012.
