The role of the psychiatrist: Position statement updated

The College has recently updated its position statement 80: The role of the psychiatrist in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

The revised focus of position statement 80 is to provide an authoritative and public-facing summary of the psychiatrist’s evolving role in response to progressive workforce and system changes.

The updated position statement:

  • Has been simplified to be more useful for advocacy, service planning, and communicating psychiatrists' contribution to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Clarifies and endorses psychiatrists' identity in non-clinical functions such as leadership, teaching, and research.
  • Supports early career psychiatrists and trainees to understand the scope and expectations of their professional role.
  • Provides relevant orientation tools for international medical graduates to understand the context and expectations of psychiatric practice in both countries.
