Introducing our new Executive Dean of Education

After an extensive and highly competitive recruitment process, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Andrew Teodorczuk to the new role of Executive Dean of Education. An exceptional field of candidates applied for the position, and we thank them for their strong applications and dedication to psychiatric education.

Andrew’s leadership will be instrumental in implementing our education-reform agenda and position us well for the next decade of training, accreditation and professional excellence.

Andrew has impressive experience in psychiatric practice, medical education and research. He spent his formative years in the United Kingdom, where he was an honorary senior lecturer at Newcastle University and consultant psychiatrist at Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Mental Health Trust. Since relocating to Australia in 2016, Andrew has held a variety of senior leadership roles in medical education across the education continuum including Deputy Head of School (Learning and Teaching) at the School of Medicine, Griffith University and MD Program Convenor at the Medical School, University of Queensland. He has also worked as the Director of Clinical Training for The Prince Charles Hospital implementing the new AMC National Framework for Prevocational (PGY1 and 2) medical training.

Clinically, Andrew completed the Substantial Comparability pathway as a Specialist International Medical Graduate obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2020. He also holds a Fellowship of the UK Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Andrew currently practices as a consultant old age psychiatrist at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane and is the Director of Medical Education at Metro North Mental Health. He holds positions as an adjunct professor at both the University of Queensland and QUT. He is also President of the binational Australasian Delirium Association. Andrew will remain a practising psychiatrist and continue his clinical work to complement the Executive Dean position.

Andrew’s research expertise is in educational approaches to best delirium practice. He has a keen interest in interprofessional education, work-based learning, and wellbeing and seeks to translate understandings from the education field to drive innovative pedagogical approaches in clinical workplaces. He has a well-established track record with more than 128 peer-reviewed publications and received numerous awards in recognition of his teaching and research, including the Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA).

The Executive Dean of Education will play a pivotal role in leading the College’s education portfolio. Working closely with the Board, CEO, committees, education taskforce, Tū Te Akaaka Roa NZ National Office and Branches, the Executive Dean will drive the revision of the Fellowship program and ensure the College’s education programs are contemporary, inclusive, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of trainees, Fellows, and the wider profession. In addition, the Executive Dean will engage closely with key stakeholders, including lived experience and indigenous partners, to co-develop a future focused and socially accountable curriculum that meets the needs of the community.

We would like to acknowledge the work of our Education Committee and College team who have this year carried significant responsibilities during a period of major transition in the education space through complex and rapidly evolving work.
