Insights from the 2025 Torohia – Medical Training Survey for New Zealand

Torohia 2025 results indicate that RANZCP trainees in Aotearoa New Zealand experience a well-structured and relevant training program, strongly supported by high-quality teaching, clinical supervision, and strong access to protected study time.

Trainees report high satisfaction with their learning experience, strong development of core competencies, and 100 per cent intention to continue through to Fellowship, with low concern about securing employment.

At the same time, the survey has identified several areas requiring College and employer attention. Areas of lower performance, relative to other New Zealand vocational trainees, include the consistency of workplace orientation, alignment of assessments with learning requirements, College responsiveness and visibility of wellbeing support, cultural safety and reporting environment around bullying, harassment and discrimination.

The higher frequency of witnessing inappropriate behaviours, alongside lower confidence in raising concerns, points to broader system-level challenges rather than isolated incidents.

The survey included responses from 52 College trainees, representing approximately 21–23% of all trainees in Aotearoa.

Although the sample represents a modest proportion of all trainees, the results reinforce the perceived value of the psychiatry training pathway, and trainee confidence in the specialty’s clinical and professional development trajectory. It also highlights opportunities for targeted improvement initiatives, and stronger collaboration with Te Whatu Ora and training sites to support safe and equitable training environments.
