Insights from Kevin Mao from the Monash Rural Training Pathways Congress 2023
19 Dec 2023
Attending the recent Monash Rural Health Congress was an eye-opening experience for me. One that has left a lasting impact on my perspective regarding a career in rural psychiatry. The conference brought together a diverse array of presentations and topics, featuring speakers ranging from rural health practitioners to stakeholders in medicine, government, NGOs, ACCHOs, and corporate entities. This unique mix of voices provided a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities within rural healthcare, which deeply resonated with my aspirations.
One of the most valuable aspects of the conference was the range of sessions offered. My favourite session was undoubtedly the panel discussion, as it provided a unique and multi-faceted perspective on the power and importance of rural health. The discussions not only illuminated the challenges faced by rural communities but also underscored the vital role that healthcare professionals can play in these settings. It was here that I began to see how I could personally integrate myself into rural communities, making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. The panel discussions were further complemented by the hands-on experience of touring the new Latrobe Regional Hospital wing.
Overall, the conference left me inspired and motivated to pursue a career in rural psychiatry.
It provided me with an incredible opportunity to connect with like-minded medical students who share a passion for rural health. These connections with future colleagues and local leaders are invaluable as they will undoubtedly serve as a support system and a source of guidance throughout my career. I am now more convinced than ever that working in a rural setting is not only personally fulfilling but also vital for addressing healthcare disparities and improving the well-being of underserved populations.
