Patient suicide is a significant challenge for clinicians, often affecting their long-term wellbeing. While it's commonly believed that assessing and predicting suicide is a core duty, this misconception can hinder our primary goal: therapeutic engagement to enhance quality of life.
In the screening Dr Rachel Gibbons, a consultant psychiatrist in the UK National Health Service addresses the realities of patient suicide, with personal experiences and insights from over 1,000 accounts of suicide loss through a peer support group. She challenges the conventional views on suicide, present current research, and connects it with psychodynamic perspectives. Dr Gibbons also discusses how effective therapeutic engagement can help in recognising and addressing distress with empathy.
Learning outcomes:
- Recognise the impacts of suicide on clinicians and teams
- How to reduce trauma and restore wellbeing
- Ways to reduce stigma and open the dialogue about the impacts of suicide
