OnlinePIF Members are invited to register for the PIF NZ Introduction to Psychiatry Short Course online on Zoom on Thursday, 24 July at 6pm.
This 1.5-hour live Short Course will enable you to gain further understanding of the psychiatry careers, the diversity and breadth of psychiatry subspecialties and various pathways in psychiatry. There will also be an opportunity to ask live questions.
Please pre-submit your questions for our presenters, as part of your registration.

Dr Alan Faulkner
Dr Alan Faulkner was awarded RANZCP Fellowship in 1995 and has worked as a General Adult Psychiatrist in Christchurch, New Zealand, since then. Clinically, his areas of interest have been Emergency Psychiatry and GP Liaison work. Dr Faulkner has had a longstanding interest in supervising trainees and took on the role of Director of Training for the Christchurch Psychiatric Registrar Training Program in 2013 and the role of Chair of the RANZCP New Zealand Training Committee in 2020.

Dr Malachi Ropata
Stage 3 trainee
Dr Malachi Ropata is a Stage 3 psychiatry trainee currently on a break from training and working in a locum capacity in 2025. Dr Ropata completed a medical degree at the University of Auckland and has undertaken psychiatry training in both Wellington and Rotorua.
He has experience in regional and Māori mental health settings, with a particular interest in equity and co-produced models of care.

Dr Michael Smith
Co-director of Training and Adult community psychiatrist
Dr Michael Smith is the co-director of training for the Christchurch Psychiatric Registrar Training Programme. He works as an adult community psychiatrist covering the Mid-Canterbury region. Originally from the UK he completed his psychiatry training in Christchurch and has lived and worked in Canterbury for the last 20 years.
