Dr Joan Haliburn
Joan Haliburn is a child, adolescent and family psychiatrist of almost 40 years, a Fellow of the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatry and an International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. She worked initially in the public sector and later moved to private practice. She trained in the Conversational Model of psychotherapy with Professor Russell Meares in the 1980’s and this training influenced her psychiatric work with adolescents and families, in the child protection, juvenile justice system, and as an expert witness in the Family Law Courts with which she was involved for several years. She has written numerous papers and presented at conferences both nationally and internationally. She co-authored with Russell Meares and colleagues The Conversational Model – A Clinician’s Guide, Routledge 2000, authored, Short Term Dynamic Interpersonal Psychotherapy – A Clinician’s Manual, Karnac, 2019, and co-edited Humanizing Mental Health Care in Australia, Routledge, 2020. She was a founding member of The Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy in 1989 its President 2005 -2008 and its Director of Training for over 10 years. She was on the Board of Directors, ISSTD and a member of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders, and the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry. She currently works in private practice as a consultant psychiatrist, psychotherapy supervisor and lecturer, University of Sydney Psychotherapy Training Program, at Westmead Hospital.
