Reflection: 2025 AMSA National Conference

Jayde Thyer

Medical student 4th Year at University of Adelaide

I thoroughly enjoyed attending my first ever med convention in Sydney! I attended as many psych academic sessions as I could but a highlight had to be hearing from Dr. Pramundie Gunaratne and her experiences in advocacy regarding NSW’s Psychiatry Crisis. I also really enjoyed hearing Tanya McGregor speak from her experience working for the Aboriginal Health Council in SA and attended a lot of breakout sessions around psych including one on sexual health and a talk about mental health work from a doctor that visited Gaza. It was really interesting and provided us a lot of insight into the diversity of work in psychiatry.

I had a great opportunity to also chat to Dr. Michael Kidd after his talk to ask about his story and how that’s shaped his journey in the medical field especially around Indigenous topics.

I made so many friends, was able to connect with other Indigenous med students, and made some lifelong memories.

I really want to thank you for the opportunity to attend. This will be a highlight of my year. I was able to learn so much especially around psych which will help me throughout my medical career.
