March 2022 Alternative Assessment Pathway

To support candidates’ progression to Fellowship, the College will be offering the Alternative Assessment Pathway (AAP) in lieu of the scheduled March OSCE.

Structure and format

The Alternative Assessment Pathway comprises:

  1. Portfolio Review of the three most recent end-of-rotation In-Training Assessments (ITAs), including at least one Stage 3 ITA of 3 FTE months duration.

    Where the required standard could not be demonstrated in the Portfolio Review, candidates will proceed to Case-based Discussion (CbD).
  2. Case-based Discussion (CbD) – a 45-minute clinical case-based discussion with two assessors.


You may apply for the Alternative Assessment Pathway if you meet the following criteria at 17 March 2022.

  • Trainees must have succesfully completed 30 months of FTE training, including 18 months FTE in Stage 2.
  • SIMG candidates must have current compatibility status with the College and attempts available.
  • All training records must be up to date.

Candidates who withdrew from the November 2021 AVOSCE and missed the opportunity to participate in the November AAP due to being ineligible, withdrawing, or other reasons may also apply.

Regulations - OSCE


The Alternative Assessment Pathway application fee is $700 AUD / NZD.

This fee provides access to both the Portfolio Review and Case-based Discussion stages of the assessment.

How to apply

Applications for the March assessment are closed.

  • Candidates who registered in December 2021 for the March 2022 OSCE must reapply for a place in the March Alternative Assessment Pathway.
  • Previously submitted applications will not ensure a place in the March 2022 assessment.
  • Applications will be reviewed and candidates will be notified of the outcome and next steps.

Candidate priority

The March Alternative Assessment Pathway will use similar criteria to the 2021 AVOSCE for prioritising candidates.

Priority criteria include:  

  • Completion of 52+ months of accredited training time (as reflected on the training record)
  • As of 17 March 2022, have only the OSCE and one other assessment outstanding.
  • SIMG candidates who have only the OSCE outstanding, or whose comparability status expires before 23 July 2022 (next exam as per the current published schedule). 
  • Candidates who have registered for three cancelled OSCE examinations.
  • Candidates who withdrew from the November 2021 AVOSCE and were not able to participate in the November AAP.

Special consideration

Applications for special consideration for priority status will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

Policy and Procedure on Special Consideration

No disadvantage status

The March 2022 Alternative Assessment Pathway has a ‘no disadvantage’ status.

  • An unsuccessful attempt (as a final outcome for the AAP) will not count towards your trajectory as a failed assessment, however it will require Targeted Learning for trainees.
  • Further details are to be worked out via the Committee for Training, and trainees will be advised accordingly. SIMG candidates are not required to undertake Targeted Learning.

Portfolio Review

End of rotation ITA selection

The following rules regarding end of rotation ITAs apply:

  • The three most recent end-of-rotation In-Training Assessments (ITAs) will be considered.
  • A SIMG portfolio review will involve the three most recent ITAs, however, those who have completed fewer than three will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • For trainees, this must include at least one Stage 3 ITA of at least three months FTE duration. Trainees without at least one Stage 3 ITA of three months duration will progress directly to a Case-based Discussion.
  • Trainee end-of-rotation ITAs from Semester 2, 2021 will be considered as part of the portfolio review as one of the three ITAs required. For SIMG candidates, end of rotation ITAs ending by 6 February 2022 will be considered.
  • ITAs for rotation 1, 2022 will not contribute to the Portfolio Review.
  • Where a candidate has two end-of-rotation ITAs submitted for one rotation, both ITAs will be considered by the panel. This would be considered one end-of-rotation ITA submission.

The portfolio review will not consider any retrospective applications to alter supervisor feedback contained in the form.

Please ensure that all end-of-rotation ITAs are submitted in a timely manner to reduce delays to the Portfolio Review. ITAs that have not been received cannot be considered as part of the process.

Candidates who are unable to achieve a successful Portfolio Review will proceed to the Case-based Discussion assessment.

Case-based Discussion (CbD)

The Case-based Discussion is a 45-minute clinical case-based discussion with two assessors. 

Assessment format

  • The CbD assessment will be delivered online via Zoom. If Zoom cannot be accessed, approval can be sought to use Microsoft Teams as a backup platform. 
  • Candidates must provide a typed case summary of up to 1500 words per case. 
  • The cases selected can be from any age range. All cases will be assessed at the standard of a generalist psychiatrist level. This may include cases where candidates completed a single assessment of a patient.
  • The College will assign assessors to a CbD assessment based on their availability and ‘Can’t See’ requirements, using the existing Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) ‘Can't See’ process where possible to mitigate any conflict of interest.

Once the request is lodged, progression to the next step of the Alternative Assessment Pathway will be placed on hold until the review process is complete.

In accordance with the CbD Assessment Guidelines, CbDs will not be recorded by candidates or assessors. If, however, a CbD assessment is recorded this will be in breach of the guidelines. The College will not accept or consider any recordings as supporting evidence in the context of a reconsideration, review, or appeal submitted to the College.
