Australia’s future health workforce – Psychiatry
Publishing organisation: Department of Health
Year of publication: 2016
Australia’s Future Health Workforce reports are prepared by the Commonwealth Department of Health with the expert input of the National Medical Training Advisory Network. This report provides an analysis of the psychiatric workforce across Australia, including the results of updated supply and demand projections and recommendations for improving workforce capacity and distribution.
The 2016 report predicts an undersupply of 125 psychiatrists by 2030, requiring a 3.3% annual increase of overseas trained psychiatrists. The report makes a number of further findings and recommendations relevant to the training and supervisory capacities of the psychiatric workforce in Australia as well as the effects of the Specialist Training Program and the introduction of the new Fellowship program in 2012.
