The Department of Health has confirmed with the College that as part of Australia’s COVID-19 health response the Government will extend the COVID-19 specialist telehealth items in their current form, for a further 3 months, from 1 April 2021 to 30 June 2021.

Further information about the extension of Australia’s COVID-19 health response is available in the Prime Minister's announcement on extending Australia's COVID-19 health response.

The Department advises that they will continue to review the ongoing role of COVID telehealth in supporting patients during the pandemic, and plan a longer term arrangement for MBS specialist telehealth in consultation with peak medical professional groups, including the RANZCP’s Telehealth Advocacy Steering Group, chaired by the President Elect A/Prof Vinay Lakra.

The MBS COVID-19 specialist telehealth item factsheets will be updated to reflect this 3-month extension and will be published on the MBS Online website shortly.

The College will continue to advocate strongly for a permanent continuation of the item numbers.
