Statement from the RANZCP on sentence of former psychiatrist

26 April 2018

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) notes the sentence of former Western Australian psychiatrist, Ian McAlpine. The RANZCP can confirm that this individual is not a current practising psychiatrist and was removed as a member of the RANZCP in 1992 after being found guilty of unprofessional conduct by the Medical Board of Western Australia.

The RANZCP has a zero-tolerance policy to boundary violations such as these, which have no place in mental health care and particularly in the care of children and adolescents. The RANZCP recognises the significant hurt and trauma which these events cause individuals and their families, and we hope they are being supported appropriately.

If you are or have been a victim of child abuse, or if you have any information about someone being abused, please contact police on 131 444. If you or someone you know needs help, support is available from Lifeline on 13 11 14.
