The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Victorian Branch welcomes the announcement of Deputy Premier, the Hon. James Merlino, as the new Victorian Minister for Mental Health.

Deputy Premier Merlino’s experience as Deputy Premier of Victoria and Minister for Education will be invaluable to leading the mental health sector throughout this time of change.

The RANZCP Victorian Branch has previously enjoyed a strong and collaborative relationship with the Minister for Mental Health and looks forward to working with the new Minister to shape a mental health system which meets the needs of all Victorians.

The mental health system is going through an unprecedented period of challenge and reform, with the COVID-19 pandemic and the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

It is critical that there is strong, consistent leadership in the mental health sector, from the Minister through to individual mental health services. Psychiatrists have a critical role within the mental health system, including through the provision of mental health care, guiding service improvement, and in clinical leadership roles.

The RANZCP Victorian Branch would like to thank Martin Foley for the significant work he has undertaken in the role of the Minister for Mental Health and wishes him well in his new appointment to Minister for Health.
