The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) welcomes the appointment of the two new board directors, Professor Helen Milroy and Dr Jason Lee, both psychiatrists, to the Beyond Blue board.

‘We are delighted by the appointment of these two highly respected and dedicated psychiatrists who will each bring to their role a wealth of professionalism and understanding about mental health and the needs of the diverse populations and communities they serve,’ said the RANZCP President, Associate Professor John Allan.

‘The RANZCP has been the fortunate recipient of Professor Milroy’s knowledge and expertise for some time now through her active involvement in and contributions to numerous expert College committees, including the recently established President’s Advisory Group on Suicide Prevention.

‘Professor Milroy is also a distinguished member of the inaugural RANZCP Foundation Committee which is responsible for overseeing the promotion of Foundation scholarships, research and training in psychiatry in Australia and in New Zealand, and by way of a range of international health projects.’

In addition to her extensive experience in perinatal, child and adolescent mental health, Professor Milroy is especially committed to improving the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through her many and diverse leadership roles across the country.

‘It is also pleasing to see a rurally trained and accomplished psychiatrist like Dr Jason Lee, who has dedicated himself to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the diverse populations of regional and remote Australia, receive such recognition for his invaluable work.

‘His experience in the provision of outreach services to remote communities in some of the northernmost parts of Australia, as well as his work with developing culturally safe community mental health services, will help to amplify the voice of some of our most culturally and linguistically diverse and at-risk populations,’ said Associate Professor Allan.

Dr Lee has similarly distinguished himself at the RANZCP having held and given of himself in numerous long-standing roles such as with the Queensland Branch Committee for eight years and as an outstanding Chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Committee for over six years.

The RANZCP also notes that psychiatrist Professor Michael Baigent is moving on from his position on the Beyond Blue board and acknowledges his many distinguished and dedicated years of service in championing the importance of evidence-based practice and supporting the mental health of all Australians.
