Potential therapeutic use of psychedelic substances

14 May 2020

Most recently, the RANZCP President, Associate Professor John Allan, was featured on Nine’s 60 Minutes program to discuss the topic in the context of research taking place overseas, and the reported experiences of certain individuals involved in these trials.

As a medical college, we are open to better and more effective treatments for mental illness but are also mindful of the known harms of psychedelics.

There is a requirement for research under trial conditions to examine the efficacy, effectiveness and safety of psychedelic therapies for potential use in psychiatric practice.

The College will continue to monitor the emerging discussions, research and evidence on the potential benefits of these substances, when accompanied by psychotherapy.

The RANZCP Board will review the new Clinical Memorandum on the therapeutic use of psychedelic substances in May.
