The College congratulates Professor Pat McGorry and Orygen for being awarded a historic $33 million grant from the United States’ National Institutes of Health (NIH).
This is the largest competitive grant that has ever been awarded by the NIH to an Australian-led medical research project.
The aim of this grant is to conduct research to develop models to help better understand and support young people at risk of developing psychotic illness, in particular schizophrenia.
RANZCP President-Elect, Associate Professor Vinay Lakra congratulated Professor McGorry and the Orygen team on their well-earned grant.
‘We look forward to seeing the results of this significant medical research grant,’ said Associate Professor Lakra.
‘Young people and their mental health is an issue of significant importance and this research will make a great difference in our understanding of and providing treatment for psychotic illnesses, particularly schizophrenia.
‘Congratulations to Professor McGorry and the Orygen team.’
