College statement in response to Sri Lanka attacks

23 April 2019
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) expresses its deep concern and sadness at the senseless and brutal attacks that occurred in Sri Lanka, on Easter Sunday.

RANZCP President Dr Kym Jenkins said: ‘Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all of those impacted by this horrible set of events.’

‘We also turn to support our Sri Lankan friends and colleagues of the Sri Lankan College of Psychiatrists who should know we are here and available to assist in any way we can.’

‘For the coming days and months, we know our colleagues will be shouldering the impact of these attacks and caring for the community, whilst also struggling with loss and shock.’

‘These events have affected and will continue to impact many people, their families and communities in Sri Lanka and indeed across the world.’

It is vital that people who find themselves struggling to cope with serious incidents such as these seek out help from mental health professionals,’ said Dr Jenkins.
