National and international experts to gather in Sydney for the International Medicine in Addiction C

The International Medicine in Addiction Conference 2017 (IMiA17) will examine a diverse range of topics including cannabis use, lockout laws, gaming, methamphetamines, food addiction and many more.

Co-hosted by The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, The Royal Australasian College of Physicians and The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners the conference will be held at the International Convention Centre Sydney from March 24 – 26, 2017. 

‘‘The conference is an important event as it brings together all the different specialties that work in the addiction space to share the latest information and research from Australia and internationally,’ said Professor Malcolm Hopwood, President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry.

‘This year’s conference has a particular focus on addiction and its interplay with other physical, social and mental health issues,’ Professor Hopwood said. 

Presentations of interest to the media include: 

  • ‘Addiction and ADHD: Epidemiology, genetics, neurobiology and treatment’ - Professor Wim van den Brink from the Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam.
  • ‘Time for Medical Cannabis: what is the evidence?’ – Professor Nick Lintzeris, the University of Sydney.
  • ‘Are prisons the biggest drug treatment service in Australia?’ – Dr Cameron Loy, Metropolitan Remand Centre, Melbourne
  • ‘Current approaches to smoking cessation’ – Associate Professor Colin Mendelsohn, School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of New South Wales.
  • ‘Supervised injecting facilities: A polarizing political proposal or an essential price of our puzzle?’ – Dr Marianne Jauncey, Uniting Sydney Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, Sydney.
