The Northfield Experiments 70 Years On

More than 70 years ago during the Second World War what became known as the Northfield Experiments began in a southern suburb of Birmingham, England. By 1946 these experiments had ceased and the major participants had journeyed in different directions but carried with them new ideas. John Rickman, Wilfred Bion, Tom Main, Sigmund Foulkes, Harold Bridger, Patrick De Mare and others at the end of the war dispersed to create abundantly in the fields of psychoanalysis and, more particularly, what is termed "applied psychoanalysis". This latter term includes the development of the principles and practices of therapeutic communities, major contributions to the development of psychoanalytic group therapy, the further propagation and acceptance of individual analytic psychotherapy within and beyond the United Kingdom, the application of an analytic understanding to organizations and more. This paper is about these and related matters, some of which have failed to be passed on to the younger generations of Australian psychotherapists. This contribution has as a background the author working for over 2 years at the Cassel Hospital, London early in the 1990's.

Paul Coombe is a psychiatrist and individual and group psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice. Formerly Consultant Child Psychiatrist at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. He was the Overseas Senior Registrar in Psychotherapy at the Cassel Hospital, London 1990 to 1993. Past President of the Australian Association of Group Psychotherapists and member of the Victorian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists. He has published widely in local and international journals including in the areas of family therapy, psychoanalytic aspects of eating disorders, small and large analytic groups, the treatment of Munchausen's Syndrome by proxy(also included as a chapter in a book), the works of William Shakespeare and recently on Epistemology and the nature of Truth.
