The Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS) is the first National Survey of all five forms of Child Maltreatment in Australia. It established the prevalence of emotional, sexual and physical abuse, neglect and exposure to domestic violence during childhood in the Australian population. Of immense importance to psychiatry, the associations between each form of child maltreatment, common mental disorders and health risk behaviours including self harm and suicide attempts were determined.
The ACMS is influencing Australian health and child protection policy. This landmark study established that Child Maltreatment is endemic in Australia, it is strongly associated with mental illness and females are disproportionately affected.
This webinar will provide a comprehensive overview of child maltreatment in Australia and a discussion of the role of psychiatrists in prevention and intervention of mental illness and child maltreatment.
