Aged Care

Projections suggest that mental health related disease burden will grow markedly as a proportion of overall disease burden.  It is therefore inevitable that, as the population ages, an increasing number of older people will suffer mental illness and require aged care mental health services specific to their needs. Groups that particularly require attention are those with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, those vulnerable to depression and suicide in later life, and those growing older with a mental illness that they have suffered throughout life.

All older Australians must have adequate access to specialty mental health and dementia care services.  Mental health funding and services should be integral to planning and reforming the aged care system to achieve equal access to quality care between physical and mental health. Greater investment in older people’s mental health services, and better access to services currently denied to older people, will be essential ingredients for delivering equality.
