Adult Mental Health and Addiction Services are seeking applications from a vocationally registered Psychiatrist, interested in working in the rural health setting.

The current development of the rural specialty, and the work in hand to develop integrated services across the Coast, offer you the opportunity to become involved in the design of an optimal service for the future. Opportunity to become a member of the Rural Special Interest group of the RANZCP.

The West Coast District Health Board (WCDHB) Mental Health team is small. You will be one of a team of five psychiatrists (3 FTE) working collegially with a stable and experienced workforce to provide specialist services to a population of approximately 32,000 people. We have good systems in place that support collegial relationships and professional development.

Rural services requires a high degree of flexibility as the work is diverse. The role is essentially for a generalist and may include responsibility for aspects of general adult psychiatry (community and inpatient), addictions, older persons and child and adolescents. The exact range of clinical responsibilities will be negotiated in regard to your experience, interests and the Service needs.

Workplace Health is a line of business within the Medibank Health Solutions Division and provides health assessments, pre-employment and fitness for duty examinations, medico-legal work, workers’ compensation, work capacity assessments, occupational rehabilitation, fitness for specific work-related requirements, and health advice throughout Australia.


An opportunity exists for an experienced Psychiatrist to join our team of health professionals. We have vacancies based at our Surry Hills, Parramatta, and Canberra clinics.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Provide a full range of specialised psychiatric diagnosis services, fitness for duty and medico-legal assessments complete with relevant report writing 
  • Ability to deliver an assessment relevant to a workplace with an understanding of the Occupational Health context
  • Provide specialised assessments ensuring care is responsive to both patient needs and relevant to workplace requests and environment
  • Contribute to the regional planning and development of psychiatric services
  • Participate in the audit and clinical governance program and contribute to the development of Clinical Quality Standards.

Applicants should be suitably qualified and eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Experience in an Occupational Health setting would be desirable but is not essential.

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health (Forensicare) is a dedicated statutory agency providing forensic mental health services to mentally ill offenders. Forensicare, located in Fairfield an inner Melbourne suburb, is a state-wide specialist mental health service that provides quality clinical services. A number of fixed term positions for a Registrar will be available from May 2012, August 2012 and February 2013. Experience at the Medical Officer or Registrar level in psychiatry in a hospital environment is essential. An interest in Forensic Psychiatry is desirable.

CLINICAL DIRECTOR, MENTAL HEALTH (MOUNT ISA)

Remuneration value up to $452 978 p.a., comprising salary between $147 491 - $187 000 p.a., employer contribution to superannuation (up to 12.75%), annual leave loading (17.5%), private use of fully maintained vehicle, communications package, professional development allowance, professional development leave 3.6 weeks p.a., professional indemnity cover, locality allowance, inaccessibility incentive half paid at completion of each six months service, private practice arrangements plus employer provided accommodation, overtime and on-call allowances. In addition, provide professional leadership within the Mental Health Service at Mount Isa Hospital and within the Mount Isa District Health Services. Provide training, education and supervision to medical staff and other health care professionals.

Regional Victoria’s largest health service in Geelong – a picturesque city on Corio Bay with Melbourne just 45 minutes away by road - requires a Psychiatrist to work with the JIGSAW Young Person’s Mental Health Service caring for young people aged from 16-25 years of age.

You will be a passionate, committed psychiatrist looking to experience a period of working in the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula, supporting an active and enthusiastic youth mental health team.

You will hold responsibility for youth inpatients in the Swanston Centre at the Geelong Hospital and the PARC unit in Belmont. JISAW is part of the headspace initiative in Geelong. Barwon Health Mental Health Services has a 32-bed acute inpatient unit and a 6-bed PARC facility.

The team provides mental health crisis management, intake assessments of new patients, and case management, together with subacute and acute inpatient care. The consultant is supported by a registrar (College Trainee). The wider JIGSAW team includes four consultants and four registrars along with a team of qualified and experienced youth case managers.

DEPUTY PSYCHIATRIST MEMBERS OF THE MENTAL HEALTH REVIEW TRIBUNAL (WELLINGTON)

The Ministry of Health is seeking senior and experienced candidates for appointment as deputy psychiatrist members of the Mental Health Review Tribunal (MHRT). Appointments will be made in June 2012. The appointment is for a three-year term.

Tribunal members are appointed by the Minister of Health under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 to consider applications for review of patients subject to that Act.

The MHRT is a specialised tribunal that has to deal with difficult legal issues concerning mental health.  It makes determinations and recommendations involving fundamental human rights with significant implications not only for the patients themselves but also for their families and the community.

All applications should include a curriculum vitae which addresses the applicant's suitability to be appointed based on these key criteria:

  • an ability to perform in public office in a semi-judicial role
  • a reputation for integrity, honesty and independence 
  • decision-making skills including impartiality and sound judgment 
  • communication skills, including an ability to communicate well with legal and medical professionals and people receiving mental health services 
  • an ability to think analytically, quickly and express themselves with clarity, especially under pressure
  • an in-depth knowledge of relevant legislation and review processes
  • cultural awareness, sensitivity and knowledge
  • vocational registration as a psychiatrist with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
