The purpose these awards is to offer real incentive to special achievements within the different areas of College interest. In addition to a Citation, Incentive Awards usually comprise monetary or travel assistance to enable the recipient to acquire new knowledge or assistance in helping the successful nominee to disseminate new knowledge (GC1/86/2).
Organon Senior Research Award The Organon awards, made possible by the Organon company, were established in 1978 to recognise excellence in research in psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand. An annual Organon Senior Research Award is made to a Fellow who has made the most significant contribution to psychiatric research in Australia and New Zealand over the preceding five years.
Form of award The Senior Research Award consist of a citation plus $15,000 award is presented by a representative of Organon (Aust) Pty Ltd. Organon Young Psychiatrist Award The Organon Young Psychiatrist Award was established in 1979 to recognise excellence in research in psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand. An annual award is presented to a Fellow or Fellows of the College who have contributed the most significant paper presented at the immediately preceding Congress or who have otherwise published or presented the most significant research material within five years of their election to Fellowship of the College.
Form of award The Young Psychiatrist Award consist of a citation plus $2,500. Lilly Psychiatry Fellowship The Lilly Psychiatry Fellowship, made possible by Eli Lilly Australia Pty Ltd, was established in May 1993 (GC1/93.R63). The award recognises and supports research in psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand by providing a one year Fellowship to graduates in medicine who have successfully completed basic training towards Fellowship of the RANZCP and who wish to commence or continue a career of research in psychiatry.
Form of award The Fellowship consists of a stipend of $30,000 plus an additional $5,000 for equipment/incidentals.
Mark Sheldon Prize The Mark Sheldon Prize was established in 2000 to honour the memory of College Fellow, Dr Mark Sheldon. The Prize recognises the meritorious work done in service provision or research to advance knowledge and understanding of indigenous mental health. This work may have been recorded in a Section II dissertation, but not necessarily. The work should be undertaken, where possible, within the first five years after completing Section I of the requirements for Fellowship of the College.
Form of award The Prize consists of a medallion and certificate (bearing a brief description of the work of Dr Mark Sheldon and the reason for the award established in his memory) together with a bound copy of his dissertation.
Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age Essay Prizes The Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age (FPOA) offers two categories of Essay Prize. The first is for a psychiatry trainee or a psychiatrist during the first year after their qualification as a Fellow. The prize is awarded for a paper suitable for publication in a refereed scientific journal on a psychiatry of old age topic. The paper may present original research data, suitably referenced clinical reports or a detailed review of an area of literature relevant to the psychiatry of old age. Modified versions of the College dissertation are acceptable. Form of award Currently the prize is $400. A further $100 will be awarded if the paper is published.
Three further prizes are offered to medical students or students in any other health discipline (eg social work) for an essay on any topic related to psychiatry of old age. Examiners will be appointed by the executive of the Faculty, and they will have the right not to make an award If no submitted essay is considered of meritorious standard. The essay should be between 2000 and 3000 words in length.
Currently the prizes are of $500, $200 and $100. Medical student essay prizes Nursing and allied health essay prize FPOA advanced trainee project prize Medlicott Award in Forensic Psychiatry The Medlicott Award in Forensic Psychiatry is open to Fellows of the College and Trainees who have successfully completed the Section II Examination or have been exempted from Section II Examination requirements. Nominees shall have completed meritorious research in the field of forensic psychiatry over the preceding two years. Applicants who have completed research in forensic psychiatry for the Section II Examination for Fellowship of the RANZCP shall be entitled to submit that research for consideration for the Medlicott Award. Form of award The award comprises a gold medal and certificate plus a grant of A$1500 Rural Research Award The Rural Psychiatry Research Award is made annually to the Fellow or Fellows of the College who have made the most significant contribution to rural psychiatric research in Australia and New Zealand over the preceding twelve months. Work performed partly in Australia/New Zealand and partly elsewhere will be acceptable. Form of award The award comprises a Citation plus A$5,000 which is to be used at the discretion of the recipient(s) for the furthering of their research and travel assistance to attend presentation of the award at Annual Congress. The Connell Werry Prize The Connell Werry Prize is made to the Advanced Trainee in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry who presents the most outstanding paper or poster at the Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s Annual Scientific Meeting. The prize consists of a certificate together with $1000 to be spent attending a Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Annual Scientific Meeting or an international conference in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. Advanced Trainees who meet the criteria and whose abstracts are accepted for presentation at the Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s Annual Meeting will be automatically considered. Terms of Reference RANZCP Young Investigator Grant Please note the next round of grants closes 9am Monday 23 April 2007. - The Board encourages research as an important activity for psychiatric training. The Board believes that knowledge of research theory and methods is essential for the practice of clinical psychiatry.
- The Board administers the grants for the College. This program provides a number of small grants on a competitive basis to trainees or other eligible applicants (see iii) to facilitate research projects. Grants of up to $6,000.00 are available.
- The grant is available to:
- i Trainees in any year of training
- ii College Fellows in the first two years after Fellowship
- iii Medical Students who are conducting research supervised by a Fellow of the College
Pfizer Awards Description The Pfizer Awards, made possible by Pfizer (Australia) Pty Ltd, were established in 1996 to recognise and encourage young researchers to participate in the College Congress. Awards are given for the best oral presentation and the four best poster presentations in a category of new research at the College Congress. Form of award The Pfizer Presentation Award comprises sponsorship to attend an overseas scientific meeting in the field of psychiatry or neuropsycho-pharmacology including travel, registration and accommodation expenses. A sum of $1,000 is provided for each Pfizer Poster Award. These awards are presented by a representative of Pfizer at the Congress .
