The Section of Psychotherapy represents and promotes the psychotherapeutic way of working with patients, noting the importance of development, understanding and empathy when working with patients, in keeping with the Bio-Psycho-Social model of psychiatry. The therapies included under the Section’s umbrella of interest range from the supportive psychotherapies, the brief structured therapies, group, family and couple therapies to the longer term dynamic psychotherapies and psychoanalysis.
The Section Membership includes general psychiatrists as well as specialist psychotherapists and psychoanalysts.
Membership of the Section of Psychotherapy is open to all College Fellows, Affiliate Members of the RANZCP and Psychiatry Trainees.
About the Section of Psychotherapy
The Section of Psychotherapy was established to:

Promote the objects of the College (as stated in the Constitution) with particular reference to the area of psychotherapy;

Promote and encourage the study of psychotherapy in all its aspects by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and knowledge;

Promote and encourage the highest theoretical, practical and ethical standards in the delivery of psychotherapy services;

Promote and encourage training in psychotherapy of the highest standard for trainee psychiatrists, medical undergraduates and students of related mental health professions;

Promote and facilitate research in psychotherapy;

Liaise and cooperate with societies and associations outside the College in the study and practice of psychotherapy;

Assist the College in the preparation of position statements and other memoranda on psychotherapy;

Facilitate interest in and inform the general community about psychotherapy, and particularly to promote a clear understanding of the subject from the perspectives of the College and Section.
Activities of the Section of Psychotherapy
The Section assists psychiatrists and trainees by providing a resource base which allows colleagues to develop and maintain their knowledge and psychotherapy skills, and by promoting the continuing development of psychotherapy as a field of mental health care.

Psychotherapy keynote and stream speakers and activities at RANZCP Congresses

Section of Psychotherapy Scientific Meetings

A quarterly Section newsletter which advertises forthcoming meetings and other events of interest

A group subscription to PEP-WEB (Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing On-line) which allows access to journals in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis plus a number of key texts from your own compute

Special assistance for supervisors, in the form of meetings and workshops for supervisors
2. By supporting Training in Psychotherapy for psychiatry trainees and graduates who are interested to refresh and/or upgrade their psychotherapy skills.
3. By providing additional inducements to encourage colleagues to participate in CME and Psychotherapy Training, including the annual Research Award and Psychotherapy Essay Prize, discounted Psychotherapy conference registration fees and discounted PEP-WEB subscription for Section members and trainees.
4. By promoting ethical practice amongst Fellows and trainees.
5. By assisting the RANZCP in preparing position statements and with certain other projects and problems as these arise.
6. By providing some administrative framework to look after the needs of the Section and its members, including the need to ensure that Section funds are spent with careful consideration for the benefit of psychotherapy and the Section’s members.
The Section of Psychotherapy runs its activities without drug company sponsorship.
Training in Psychotherapy
The RANZCP offers an advanced training program in psychotherapy, and awards the Certificate of Advanced Training in The Psychotherapies to candidates upon completion.
The advanced training program is open both to trainees who have completed Basic Training of RANZCP accredited training and are working towards Fellowship, and also to Fellows of the College who wish to extend their training in this field.
