The Section of Addiction Psychiatry aims to: 

  • Promote and encourage the study and practice of addiction psychiatry;
  • Provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and knowledge about addiction psychiatry and provide collegial support to Fellows of the College practicing in the field;
  • Promote better understanding of addiction psychiatry, alcohol and other drug problems, and problem gambling amongst Fellows of the College and the wider community; 
  • Promote and encourage training in addiction psychiatry for trainee psychiatrists, medical undergraduates and students of related mental health professions;
  • Promote and facilitate research in addiction psychiatry;
  • Liaise and cooperate with societies and associations outside the College involved in fields related to addiction psychiatry;
  • Assist the College in the preparation of position statements and other memoranda on addiction psychiatry;
  • Enable the College to play an effective role in the development of community policies and programs concerning alcohol and other drug problems and problem gambling.
