The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) is the principal organisation representing the medical specialty of psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand.
The College is responsible for training, examining and awarding the Fellowship of the College qualification to medical practitioners. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with specialist qualifications wishing to work as a specialist in Australia are required to obtain Fellowship of the RANZCP. In order to do this, you must apply for Specialist Assessment (also known as ‘Exemptions’) with the RANZCP via the Australian Medical Council (AMC). While you are pursuing Fellowship, you would be eligible to work as a senior psychiatry registrar or senior medical officer. To be eligible to work as a specialist you would need to be employed in a designated area of need. If successful, exemption status with the RANZCP is generally granted for three years.
