Mental disorders represent the largest single cause of disability in Australia and New Zealand, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the burden of non-fatal disease.   In view of the very high cost to the community of mental disorder, it is imperative that investment and support for research into mental disorder is commensurate with the cost to the community.

To help achieve this The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) supports research-related activities for psychiatrists and trainees to improve their academic and research career prospects, and advocates for adequate funding to support research and training initiatives.  The RANZCP encourages research as an important activity for psychiatric training and believes that knowledge of research theory and methods is essential for the practice of clinical psychiatry.

The RANZCP also publishes two journals: the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry contains high quality, peer-reviewed, original research articles, reviews and case reports in the field of psychiatry;  Australasian Psychiatry is a peer-reviewed journal promoting lively and informed discussions about issues at the forefront of psychiatry practice.  RANZCP members can access the full-text versions of both journals by visiting our College Journals page.
