In recent decades there have been considerable advances in the prevention and treatment of alcohol, drug and gambling related problems in Australia and New Zealand. However risky or high risk levels of engagement with these activities remain unacceptably high with a consequential effect on health, social and economic costs and devastating impacts on families and the community. The RANZCP, through the Section of Addiction Psychiatry, works to promote better understanding of alcohol, drug and gambling problems across the community. The College also plays an effective role in the development of policies and programs to minimise harm associated with alcohol, drugs and gambling.
