Social and cultural psychiatry refers to the area of psychiatry concerned with social and cultural factors in mental health and the provision of mental health services.
The Section of Social and Cultural Psychiatry was established to:

Promote the study and understanding of the role of social and cultural factors in mental health and in the provision of mental health services, and provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and knowledge;

Promote training and encourage research in the social and cultural aspects of psychiatry;

Provide the College with expert opinion in the areas of social and cultural psychiatry;

Promote social and cultural perspectives in psychiatric practice, service development and policy activity;

Build partnerships and alliances with professional and community organisations outside the College to further the study and practice of social and cultural psychiatry.
